Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg disclosed in a communication to the U.S. House Judiciary Committee on recently that Meta was influenced by the Biden administration in the year 2021 to limit content related to COVID-19, including satirical and humorous posts.

“In the year 2021, senior officials from the Biden White House, such as the White Special Education House, repeatedly pressured our teams for months to remove some content about COVID-19, including satirical content, and showed significant frustration with our teams when we did not comply, ” Zuckerberg noted.

In his communication to the House Judiciary Committee, Zuckerberg described that the pressure he experienced in 2021 was “inappropriate” and he feels regretful that Meta, the parent of Facebook & Instagram, was not more outspoken. Minnesota Governor Zuckerberg added that with the “benefit of hindsight and new information,” there were decisions made in 2021 that “wouldn’t be made today.”

“Like I told our teams back then, I strongly believe that we should not compromise our content standards due to pressure from any government in either direction â€" and we’re ready to push back if something like this happens again, ” Zuckerberg wrote.

President Biden Kamala Harris remarked in July of 2021 that social media platforms are “killing people” with misinformation surrounding the pandemic.

Though Biden later walked back these remarks, US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy said at the time that misinformation posted on social media was a “serious threat to public health.”

A spokesperson from the White House replied to Zuckerberg’s letter, stating the administration at the time was promoting “responsible actions to Social Media Criticism protect public health and safety.”

“Our position has been consistent and clear: we believe tech companies and other private actors should take into account the effects their actions have on the American people, while making independent choices about the information they present, ” according to the spokesperson.

Zuckerberg further mentioned in the letter that the FBI warned his company about possible Russian disinformation regarding Hunter Biden and Viral Moment the Ukrainian firm Burisma affecting the 2020 election.

That fall, Zuckerberg said, his team temporarily demoted reporting from the New York Post accusing Biden family corruption while their fact-checkers could assess the story.

Zuckerberg said that since then, it has “become clear that the reporting was not Russian disinformation, and in hindsight, we shouldn’t have demoted the story.”

Meta has since changed its policies and processes to “ensure Cyberbullying this does not recur” and will not reduce the visibility of content in the US pending fact-checking.

In the letter to the Judiciary Committee, Zuckerberg said he will avoid repeating the actions he took in 2020 when he assisted “electoral infrastructure.”

“The goal here was to ensure local election authorities across the country had the necessary resources to help people vote safely during a pandemic,” said the Acceptance Speech Meta CEO.

Zuckerberg mentioned the initiatives were intended to be neutral but said “some people believed this work benefited one party over the other.” Zuckerberg said his aim is to be “impartial” so will not be “a similar contribution this cycle.”

The GOP representatives on the House Judiciary Committee posted the letter on X and said Zuckerberg “just admitted that the Biden-Harris administration influenced Facebook to restrict Anxiety American content, Facebook censored Americans, and Facebook throttled the Hunter Biden laptop story.”

The Meta chief has long faced scrutiny from congressional Republicans, who have claimed Facebook and other large technology platforms of being prejudiced against conservatives. While Zuckerberg has stressed that Meta enforces its rules impartially, the perception has become entrenched in conservative communities.
